Pittsburgh Criminal Lawyer Matt Ness Meets Justice Thomas

Lawyer Matt Ness of Worgul, Sarna & Ness, Criminal Defense Attorneys, LLC with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

Lawyer Matt Ness of Worgul, Sarna & Ness, Criminal Defense Attorneys, LLC recently had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and speak with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Ness earned admission to the U.S. Supreme Court bar this spring. This admission allows him to practice before the nation’s highest court and to make arguments on behalf of clients in Supreme Court appellate cases.

As part of the recognition of his Supreme Court bar admission, Ness’s alma mater, Duquesne University School of Law, organized a trip to Washington, D.C., for alumni who were qualified to be admitted. The event included a swearing-in ceremony performed by Chief Justice John Roberts and four other justices, followed by a chance to meet the justices after the ceremony.

Ness said that Justice Thomas spent time with everyone who had been sworn in that day. Our associate had the chance to talk to Thomas about criminal law and some of Justice Thomas’s recent opinions.

Ness described the famously quiet justice as talkative, “very jolly,” and “very personable.”

“He had a laugh that would be the envy of Santa Claus,” Ness said. “It was more than I envisioned because he has a reputation for never talking in court.”

Ness was accompanied to the swearing-in ceremony by his father.

“When you go, you can only bring one guest. To me, it was important to bring my dad with me,” he said. “My dad is not an attorney. He’s a blue-collar guy. It was a great honor for him to see where his little boy had reached.”

Lawyer Matt Ness Now Admitted to Supreme Court Bar

Ness said his new status as an attorney admitted to the Supreme Court bar gives Worgul, Sarna & Ness, Criminal Defense Attorneys, LLC an expanded ability to serve clients by having the capability to petition the court to hear important criminal appeals.

“As an attorney, it’s a pretty big honor to know you’re one of the attorneys who can go argue cases in front of the grand court,” Ness said.
